The Henry Doubleday Research Association is an internationally renowned centre of excellence in organic horticulture. AndArchitects provided the masterplan for their 20 acre site. The scheme is comprised of a visitors’ centre, gardens, an administrative Headquarters and research facilities.

The focus of the project was to deliver flexible and sustainable architecture for both visitors to the gardens and HDRA’s employees, whilst actively encouraging the development of the site’s conservation areas and maintaining the remains of the original walled garden from the Audley End estate. Restored to how it might have looked in the last half of the 19th century, it is one of very few working restorations of walled gardens in the UK. The original walls are largely still intact and date from the mid 18th century.
