Chalets, Étoile du Nord

Val d’Isère, France

Étoile du Nord are two Chalets set in Val d’Isère, France. The design retains the traditional pitched chalet form and traditional materiality but is detailed in a more contemporary method to allow for large areas of glazing with tall fins that clad the external walls. The verticality of the timber fins makes reference to the alpine landscape and helps to control internal temperatures and glare within the building. The large north facing glazing not only creates a sense of arrival with the dramatic sun-lit mountains but also provides large amounts of natural daylight without excessive solar gain. 75% of the Chalets heating is obtained via a borehole, utilising the underground water source flowing through the valley.
