Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games - Sandwell Aquatics Centre

Birmingham, UK

AndArchitects were appointed by NUSSLI to provide architectural services support on a Progressive Design-Build of temporary facilities to expand the Sandwell Aquatics Centre for the Summer of 2022. The facilities included a demountable seating extension of 4000 seats, associated pedestrian access bridges and staircases, a 60m x 30m temporary climate-controlled building and a full 50m Olympic size temporary swimming pool. AndArchitects developed the architectural BIM model, developed architectural interfacing details between the temporary scheme and the permanent building, and provided advice on building regulations compliance and required derogations.

Now the games have finished, the building is being converted into a sports centre for the general public. This involves taking away the spectator seats and adding in a sports hall, gyms, activity studios, sauna, steam room, changing facilities, a football pitch and extra landscaping.
